I wouldn't necessarily say that they are the product; rather, they are the audience, or 'the target,' if you prefer the military jargon that marketers, regrettably, tend to adopt. As long as it's clear who the source is, why the content is being delivered to them, and the content itself is engaging and educational, I don't really see an issue. And yes, we do bear a huge responsibility.
